Junior Comets Volleyball Wraps Up a Bright Season

The Naselle Junior Comets volleyball team is closing out their season with a final away game against Clatskanie on Tuesday, October 21.
It’s been a fun and rewarding season for this group of 4th–6th grade girls, who’ve spent the past few months building friendships and sharpening their volleyball skills. Coaches Annie Herrold and Sylvia Hoagland, who also happen to be sisters (and moms to players on the team), say it’s been a joy coaching such a positive and hardworking group of young athletes.

“These girls are eager to learn, encourage one another, and really challenge themselves,” said the coaches. “It’s been such a pleasure watching them grow.”

This season, the Junior Comets also got a special taste of what’s ahead in their volleyball journey. The coaches helped connect the youth and varsity programs by organizing a meet-and-greet and autograph night, where varsity players signed mini volleyballs for the younger girls before their game. The theme for the night was neon, and the Junior Comets went all out, decked in bright colors and cheering their hearts out for the varsity squad.

Beyond the court, the team showed their community spirit through a “Fill in Your Volleyball” fundraiser, collecting donations to support the Naselle Youth Sports Club. The funds help cover the costs of uniforms, equipment, and ensure that local youth sports remain accessible for all families, keeping financial barriers a non-issue.
To celebrate the end of a successful season, the team is gathering for a pizza party and pin-decorating event, where they’ll craft custom pins to give to the Clatskanie players as a gesture of good sportsmanship during their final game. It’s the perfect ending to a season that’s been about more than just volleyball; it’s been about teamwork, growth, and community pride.

Confessions of a Turkey Bingo Newbie

Okay, confession time: I’ve never been to Turkey Bingo before. I know, I know… how have I lived in the Naselle area this long (15 years) and not experienced this famous community tradition? But this year is my year, and I’m ridiculously excited.
Our Naselle Sports Club is hosting the annual Turkey Bingo fundraiser, and it's the perfect way to kick off the holiday season. The doors open at 5pm, so you can get in and get hot food from concessions and a seat before bingo starts at 5:30. Here’s what I know so far about the big event:

Frozen turkeys are some of the prizes! That’s right—win your Thanksgiving bird instead of buying one at the store. How fun (and a little bit competitive) is that? I can already picture the cheers when someone yells “BINGO!” and claims their turkey.
New this year: a Bake Sale! My sweet tooth is already tingling. Between the homemade cookies, pies, and other goodies our talented local bakers are sure to bring, I have a feeling I’ll be “winning” more than just bingo.
Silent Auction with a twist. The auction items are always a big draw I hear, but here’s the exciting update: there will be a credit card machine this year. That means if you fall in love with something and want to push your bid a little higher (you know, for the kids, right?), you don’t have to worry about running out of cash. Swipe, tap, done.

But here’s the important part: bring cash for the bingo cards. Bingo is cash-only, so don’t show up empty-handed or you’ll be stuck cheering from the sidelines while everyone else competes for their frozen bird.

Here's how I would schedule my evening, if I were you.... *Cue whimsical daydream music...Pick up some goodies from the bake sale or dinner at concessions, place a couple bids in the silent auction, and then settle in with your stack of bingo cards for a shot at bringing home a turkey AND a cool prize. Honestly, even if you don’t win a thing, it's going to be worth it for the laughs seeing the Sports Club President Ryan and VP Katie dressed up as Pat Sajak and Vanna White slinging bingo balls!

So, if you’ve never been like me, or you’re a seasoned Turkey Bingo pro, come join the fun! Let’s fill the Naselle School Commons with laughter, friendly competition, and the sweet smell of baked goods. I’ll see you there - probably with powdered sugar on my face.
