Many Hands (and equipment) Make Light Work

3/25/2026

Spring season means baseball field prep time for the Naselle Sports Club. Our youth baseball field is usually booked solid between March 1 - June 20ish between baseball, softball and t-ball teams trying to squeeze in practices when the rain clouds give us a break. We threw together a last-minute work party weekend when schedules aligned for Cody Pierson to bring his equipment in and some amazing helpers like Ryan, Kevin and Brian to measure base locations and Damian to haul out loads of soil from the infield extension. On day two the work party grew to over 35 people showing up to pull weeds, rake, and scrub counters at the concessions stand. The sun was shining and we all earned hot dogs grilled up by Brian Wisdom and the kids had lots of time to play "king of the mountain" after their hard work prepping the field.

We always have a very small window to get any preparation done on the field before baseball games start at the end of March and this year we had a little extra work to be done since we added the opportunity for our older kids to play in the M70's division. Offering that option for the first time in a while, meant that we needed to cut out a few feet of grass from our baseball field between the bases and the outfield, so we could extend the base paths from 60ft to 70ft.

It was fun for the kids to watch the trucks dump their loads of clay and field materials for the next stage of mixing with the red rock. Thank you Cunningham Excavating!

Work Weekend #2

Work weekend #2 was also kind of a last-minute adventure when the M70's team was playing a scrimmage against Cathlamet and Coaches Ryan and Nick received word that our donation of field material from Cunningham Excavating was ready to go and the dump trucks were loaded and headed our way! We finished the 4th inning (Naselle 7 - Cathlamet 5) and the trucks started rolling in as the players ran off the field.
The rest of Saturday was busy with Derick Frank spreading with his skid steer, Brian Wisdom bringing his tractor and implements to mix in the different field materials and all the guys asking to take turns on the equipment while the wives shook their heads and laughed. The kids played baseball in the grass until the sun went down and everyone went home to come back Sunday and wrap up grading and smoothing everything out with a roller. While the field was getting worked on Sunday, the concessions stand cleanup was underway with our Concessions Liaison, Marijane Anderson and her helpers. A new water heater was installed, thanks to Wesley, we have a brand-new refrigerator that the Sports Club purchased this season, along with a new hot dog roller to help feed all the hungry spectators.
The number of supporters over the two weekends combined was amazing to see, and thanks to everyone's generosity with their time and equipment we have our youth baseball field and concession stand ready for Spring 2026!
